Dutch term

Kraankinderen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering History
OK, I think this is a colloquial term for somebody in a treadwheel (operating a medieval cargo crane), has this 'job' any title?

the world is a better place than it used to be... Michael, I found this;
http://www.medievaltravel.co.uk/jobs/treadmill-operator.html
The operator would trudge for hours, turning the treadmill which moved the winch on a crane. It was monotonous and dangerous because if the treadmill was damaged by the weather, or badly constructed it could come crashing down.
Michael Beijer Feb 4, 2015:
@Richard: Are you sure his work is restricted to the treadwheel part? The various refs would seem to indicate that this might not be the case.

PS: added freek's vondst ("A Compleat Dictionary English and Dutch…") to my http://wordbook.nl/
Richard Purdom (asker) Feb 4, 2015:
michael yup, I think 'crane treadwheel operator' will have to do

@freek: Very interesting dictionary ("A Compleat Dictionary English and Dutch, to which is Added a ..., Volume 1", by Egbert Buys")! Never heard of it. Wonder if it's for sale anywhere.

It has "a workman belonging to a crane". Hmm.

Seems it is:

crane operator? dekt niet echt de lading, maar is misschien niet zo erg. hangt natuurlijk van je tekst af

How about "crane worker" or "crane workman"?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I actually went with 'treadwheel lads' to reflect ' kinderen' in the Dutch"

crane workers; crane workmen

My best shot. See my Reference comment and Discussion entries.

I think mentioning the treadmill is overkill.
Example sentence:

Vauxhall crane workmen escape death because they overslept.

Other crane workers such as the signal person, repair and maintenance workers, and riggers, must meet specific qualifications …
