Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down Well, I woke up Sunday morning With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, So I had one more for dessert. Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt. Then I washed my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. I'd smoked my mind the night before With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking. But I lit my first and watched a small kid Playing with a can that he was kicking. Then I walked across the street And caught the Sunday smell of someone's frying chicken. And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost Somewhere, somehow along the way. On a Sunday morning sidewalk, I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned. 'Cause there's something in a Sunday That makes a body feel alone. And there's nothing short a' dying That's half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleeping city sidewalk And Sunday morning coming down. In the park I saw a daddy With a laughing little girl that he was swinging. And I stopped beside a Sunday school And listened to the songs they were singing. Then I headed down the street, And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing, And it echoed through the canyon Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday. And there's nothing short a' dying That's half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleeping city sidewalk And Sunday morning coming down. | 다시 세상과 마주하는 일요일 아침 아, 일요일 아침에 일어났더니 머리가 아파 어쩔 줄 모르겠는데 해장술로 마신 맥주가 괜찮았어 그래서 디저트로 한 병 더 마셨지. 그리고는 더러운 옷만 가득한 옷장을 뒤져 그중에 제일 깨끗한 셔츠를 고르고 세수를 하고 머리를 빗고 휘청휘청 계단을 내려와 세상을 마주하네. 줄줄이 담배를 태우고, 끝없이 노래를 부르며 지난 밤, 내 마음도 연기처럼 태워버렸는데 오늘 첫 담배에 불을 붙이고 보았지 깡통을 차고 노는 어린아이의 모습. 그리고 길을 건너니 어디선가 풍겨오는 일요일의 냄새, 닭 튀기는 냄새. 오! 하느님, 그 언젠가 어디선가 잃어버린 그 무엇이 생각나네. 일요일 아침 길 위에서 하느님, 차라리 맨 정신이 아니기를. 일요일은 왠지 모르게 외로운 몸뚱이 하나. 도시의 잠든 길 위에 나 홀로 서 있는 적막한 소리 죽음과도 같은 외로움, 다시 세상과 마주하는 일요일 아침. 공원에서는 작은 소녀가 아빠 손에 매달려 깔깔대는데 나는 주일학교 옆에서 발걸음을 멈추고 아이들의 노랫소리를 들었지. 그리고는 길을 내려오니 먼 곳 어디선가 외로운 종이 울리고 그 소리는 계곡에 울려퍼지네 사라져가는 어제의 꿈처럼. |
