gramma
Nije greška, ne radi se o 'grani', već o 'grami' koja je jedna od osnovnih jedinica terminologije u gramatologiji (znanosti o proučavanju sustava pisanja), pri čemu je 'gramma'=written character, letter or a part of it ili po drugoj definiciji: “gramma” = the accumulations of marks that make up writing systems ili još:
Gramma.--Gramma is a name given to any piece of writing. Luke xvi. 6. "Take your (gramma) bill," lease, or account. John v. 47. it is applied, in the plural form, to the writings of Moses; and Paul, 2 Tim. iii. 15. applies it to all the Jewish scriptures.--"You have known the holy scriptures." Like grapha, gramma, in the singular or plural form, may be rendered scriptures.

U najužem smislu, kao dio grafema tj. grafičke reprezentacije jednog slova, grama se može prevoditi i kao potez, crtica, a ni 'grana' ne zvuči loše.

Mislim da je u pitanju greška i da treba da bude "grana" u originalnom tekstu;
"...pisan kao y sa otvorenom gornjom granom..." - mislim da to ima smisla
...Shin is pronounced "sh" when it has a dot over the right branch and "s" when it has a dot over the left branch...

Da u tom slučaju sigurno nije greška...

Jedino što sam još našla što bi Vam možda moglo koristiti:
gramme (Greek: gramma) - orig. something drawn or wtitten, a character or letter; (New Webster's dictionary of Current English), i http://www.thefreedictionary.com/grammes:[French gramme, from Late Latin gramma, a small weight, from Greek, something written, small weight; see gerbh- in Indo-European roots.]
