In Canada, domestic draught beer is date coded for 3 months. Imports, however have a date code that often reaches 6 months. Why the difference? Imported beers need to be pasteurized for the long journey to North America.

Since the trip can range between 6 weeks and 2 months, the beer is not seen to be as fresh as domestic beer and therefore doesn't require the same date coding. Furthermore, date coding is a practice that generally indicates when a beer is no longer as fresh as on the first day after production.
