Ο τίτλος Doctor of Medicine είναι αυτός που απονέμεται στον αποφοιτήσαντα επιτυχώς από ιατρική σχολή και είναι έτοιμος να δώσει εξετάσεις για την άδεια. Ουσιαστικά γιαχωρίζει τον Δόκτωρ (κάτοχο PhD) σε οποιονδήποτε άλλο τομέα απότον Δόκτωρ ιατρικής, τον γιατρό δηλαδή.

"In the new Directive, the term “doctor of medicine” is generic and refers to the profession as a whole, irrespective of the professional activities concerned. These professional activities can be of three types: those of doctors with basic training, those of specialist doctors and those of general medical practitioners. Doctors with basic training (referred to as “medical practitioners” in Directive 93/16/EEC) may or may not be associated with professional activities, depending on the Member State. This is clarified in Recital 21."
Στην ίδια οδηγία της ΕΕ αναφέρει σε παράρτημα τον αντίστοιχο τίτλο του Doctor of Medicine σε πολλές ευρωπαϊκές χώρες. Για την Ελλάδα το δίνει "Πτυχίο Ιατρικής" και για την Ουγγαρία "Dr.med.univ."
