Most often the term in common (English) usage seems to be just “Diesel Fuel No.2” or “No.2 Diesel Fuel”, without bothering to make reference about fuel classes.

Fuel oil is classified into six classes, according to its boiling temperature, composition and purpose. The boiling point, ranging from 175 to 600 °C, and carbon chain length, 20 to 70 atoms, of the fuel increases with number. Viscosity also increases with fuel oil number and the heaviest oil has to be heated to get it to flow. Price usually decreases as the fuel number increases. No. 1 fuel oil, No. 2 fuel oil and No. 3 fuel oil are referred to as distillate fuel oils, diesel fuel oils, light fuel oils, gasoil or just distillate. For example, No. 2 fuel oil, No. 2 distillate and No. 2 diesel fuel oil are the same thing. Distillate fuel oils are distilled from crude oil.

軽油

軽油を広辞苑で引くと，（1）ディーゼル燃料。（2）石炭からのガソリン留分。と書かれている。「軽油」は漢字として不適当であり，中油あたりが適当だったのかもしれない。また，和製英語でGas Oilがあるが，英語ではDiesel Fuelであり，欧米人には通じにくい。このGas Oilの名は，石炭ガスからベンゼン，トルエンを回収するためのガス吸収油の沸点が280～340℃であり，これに類似していたために残ったのであろう。さて，本来の軽油の話に戻ろう。現在言う「軽油」とは，沸点が170～360℃，灯油と重油との間の留分で，各種ディーゼル燃料として使用されている。原油から得られた直流軽油を深度脱硫で硫黄分を除去して製造されている。しかし，天然の硫黄化合物が欠如すると，潤滑性能が下がるので，これを補うために潤滑性向上剤（L1）を少量添加して調製される。また，冬季には必要に応じて流動性向上剤（FI）も添加されている。
　軽油の最重要性状は流動点である。使用時に燃料タンクからエンジンまで円滑な流送が肝要であり， JIS規格でも流動点により5種類に分類されている。特1号軽油は流動点が+5℃以下，1号軽油同－2.5℃以下，2号軽油－7.5℃以下， 3号軽油－20℃以下，特3号軽油－30℃以下の5種類がある。
