Discussion

Muhammad Ikram Feb 24, 2014:
Too contextual Agree with you Basit! Barah-e-Rast is also used for live. But my point is suggested translation should be universal which can be used in all contexts as it is widely used term. I think most of the suggestions here are too contextual.
Basit Ijaz Feb 24, 2014:
Live has different translation Urdu language already understand what is Live. And it has different translation for it which is Barah-e-Raast.
Muhammad Ikram Feb 24, 2014:
real time vs live I have a feeling that some people are confusing real time with live. In Urdu live is translated as لمحہ بہ لمحہ or پل بہ پل. These two are not the same. Live is specifically used for TV (live transmission, live match, live Show etc.) but real time is vast term (it also encompasses "live") but we have to differentiate both as live cannot be used as an alternative to real time but real time can be used instead of live. For example you cannot say "Exercise keeps track of your workouts live" but we can say "real time transmission," In fact there is a famous show in US "Real time with Bill Maher". So in my opinion it is necessary to use a different word than just to take it as synonym of live.
More technically speaking, "it is actual time that a machine takes to perform an action" but as it is so fast (milliseconds) so it looks simultaneously happening. It is because of the above reasons I have suggested حقیقی وقت because it is that time which actually takes to do that certain amount of work by the machine.
Mbari (asker) Feb 23, 2014:
Category This term was given in a medical document, which explains about some kind of machines which keep tracks of workouts in real time. You may be right Muhammad Ikram, this may be a computerized machine. As I think, there category shouldn't be an issue, because one single word doesn't represent any specific fields (I'm not talking about specific terms), so one single word can appear in any document related to any field (I have translated this word while translating a religious (about Christ) book.
Muhammad Ikram Feb 23, 2014:
Computerised Machine??? As far as I can understand isn't it about any computerised machine (most probably a mobile or something) that keeps track of workout? Mabri can explain better
Shahbaz Haider Feb 23, 2014:
Dear Ikram you are right but if we look on the source text which Mbari has provided "Exercise keeps track of your workouts in real time" so i think that's why may be decided to put in medical category and i think all of us have to provide translation which best fits in the translation of this sentence .
Muhammad Ikram Feb 23, 2014:
Category? Dear Mbari!
This is not Medical term. It is computing term. Real time is "actual" time which a computer takes to perform a function (in the given case keep tracking of workout).

لمحہ بہ لمحہ

Real time means 'as it happens'. In my humblest opinion translations suggested so far are too literal and missing the concept original term is conveying. I would recomend 'Lamha ba Lamha'.
Peer comment(s):

agree Qudsia Lone : I agree with the interpretation and the suggested meaning for general use and explanation. I think it could be improved for technical use, so made my own suggestion.

حالیہ وقت

This is an IT related term, but commonly used in many fields. It simply means the action is happening in current/present time, as it is occurring, as opposed to computing something and relaying it at a later moment.

Live broadcasts for instance happen in "real time" (although there's an intentional lag of a few seconds sometimes, purposely added to edit out improper content if needed).

Stock transactions are probably conducted and reported in real time.

In given context, the machine probably instantaneously calculates and displays the distance, time, and heart rate etc of the person exercising.

بروقت، اسی وقت، اسی لمحے

The term is used in many situations and means a "quick response". For example: I will answer your questions in real time during my working hours.
میں اپنے اوقات کار کے دوران آپ کے سوالات کے جوابات بروقت/اسی وقت/اسی لمحے دوں گا۔
