: Sorry for my previous comment; I thought it referred to USA, In Canada, academic is the same as in the UK, so yours is the right answer. It would still be a type of diploma, the other type being vocational

: It's a bit more inclusive than "theoretical". It means basically everything at school except for sport and vocational studies (and breaks, etc...).
