Grade 9 is the American equivalent for 3eme
The 1 stands for the number of the class among other classes of the same grade. Therefore, you would normally have 3eme 1, 3eme 2...
This is because there are too many pupils to fit in only one class so we have to divide them.

: As Charles points out below, it could be 3, 4, 10 or 11 for the UK, which is what the Asker wants, depending which constituent country she means, (none of which matches the US version).
