Discussion

David Williams (asker) Jun 15, 2010:
My pleasure! Pleased to help :-)
casper (X) Jun 15, 2010:
@ David Williams Hmm...I see the advantages (of posting in the Discussion box) *now*. Thank you :-)
David Williams (asker) Jun 15, 2010:
Because i) the discussion allows other people to participate
ii) it allows us to edit what we have written, if necessary for any reason
iii) it is displayed in much easier to follow reverse chronological order than the notes and addenda below the answers.
casper (X) Jun 15, 2010:
@ David Williams In fact, I'm puzzled as to why you didn't post your comment in the "Notes to answerer" box, as you did the first time.
David Williams (asker) Jun 15, 2010:
Thanks, Jennifer although I'm puzzled as to why you didn't respond to my reply to the discussion in the discussion box.
David Williams (asker) Jun 15, 2010:
Thanks for the addendum, Jennifer In that case, positioning pins/shaft would still seem to make sense to me.
Michael Harris Jun 15, 2010:
Sounds good
David Williams (asker) Jun 15, 2010:
Absteckbolzen appear to be 'positioning pins' or 'alignment pins', so could this be a 'positioning shaft'?
David Williams (asker) Jun 14, 2010:
It is used for filling the holes in the fuselage, through which passengers access the aircraft, while in flight. These holes are thus also referred to as doors and are used to provide access to the aircraft.
Michael Harris Jun 14, 2010:
any idea what it is used for (the aircraft door?)
David Williams (asker) Jun 14, 2010:
In case it helps, this is followed by: z.B. Anhebewellendummy (Rohr verwenden)

In KudoZ question # 1286136 ("Absteckungen"), John Jory says:

"The pins are inserted e.g. in doors, moving parts, raised parts, etc. to secure them against indavertent movement during maintenance or repairs.
...
In farm machinery, "Abstecken" is done typically by means of linch pins."

@ David Williams (in response to your posting in the Discussion box at 09:58 hours on June 15):

Yes, "positioning pins/shaft" looks good.

Note from asker:
I don't see how they arrive at the conclusion that 'locking bolt' "makes complete sense", given that 'abstecken' has nothing to do with locking (or even connecting)?
Something went wrong...
