Iron safes built under the back seats of stagecoaches, and iron chests on steamboats and railroads provided extra protection for Wells Fargo's larger bullion shipments. Wells Fargo's Instructions to Agents gave complete details for the secure handling of gold and silver.

: Money in those days could be gold bars, silver coins and hence bullion shipment could work. But I am not fully convinced hence "neutral". The greenback was not around in the wild west?

: Paper money was in circulation, but gold and silver coins were preferred, particularly in the West, where foreign coins were also used as currency based on weight. Two of the US mints (D & S)are in the west where gold and silver were discovered and mined.
