Skulls are slags from iron and steel smelting processes and may still contain a relatively large proportion of iron.

Deskulling a slag pot in a steelworks and breaking the skull

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY0tOIwlCqs

"This drawing of the Dewhurst pattern ladle illustrates clearly the configuration of the tipping mechanism. The split ladle allowed the two halves to be separated to remove a stubborn slag skull if required. Or if someone got too enthusiastic trying to remove a skull by force, two undamaged halves could be united!"

I found this too, after digging through my archives and the Web

agree Dennis Boyd : I’m not sure if it is unorthodox to have an answer and also support a better one when it is posted, but here it is. You’d think after living in Ohio’s rust belt for ten years I might know a bit more about steel byproducts…

Steel scrap(s)

KudoZ DE-FR from 2002:

riblons de fond de poche = Eisenreste = (steel) scraps

Peer comment(s):

neutral Yorkshireman : Very close, but steel scrap is metallic steel. Bären (skulls) are iron or steel SLAG scrap that may contain a high amount of iron - literally "scrap from the bottom of the pocket" in French - the slag, for instance, from a slag pot or slag bed.

Yes! You are absolutely correct. My old-school Steel Dictionary even has an entry for “skull breakers” as Fallwerk or Schrottplatz.
