I got it wrong! Ριζομηριο is root of the thigh. Your explanation for ριζομηριο is perfectly correct. I didn't realize my find of "head of the femur" referred to the bone. In reality the med. article discussed arterial bleeding in the area of the ριζομηριο which of course would be the area and not a bone. Many thanks for your help.

The "root of the thigh" is the exact translation of "ριζομήριο" and as much of a medical term as the Greek term. See its use in examples of medical texts, e.g. http://tinyurl.com/2a8b54e .
The femur head or femoral head ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femur_head ) is part of the thigh bone (is not a region) and corresponds to "κεφαλή του μηριαίου (οστού)". Your text and other pieces about ριζομήριο do not talk about the bone but about the region (the root of the thigh).

ριζομηριο head of femur or femoral head I've found the medical term in Eng. for ριζομηριο through comparisons of photos in Eng. and Greek. It's head of femur or femoral head hope this is helpful to other translators. Many thanks to those who have contributed ideas.
