An angolban régebben léteztek olyan szavak, melyek tömören kifejezték ezt a két fogalmat. A kettő közül a "whither" viszonylag gyakran szerepel választékosabb nyelben (pl. "whither democracy?") (szinte a "quo vadis" behelyettesítéseként), a "whence" ritkább, de a nagy Oxford szótár létező és élő alakként hozza azt is.

: Csaba, ez nem a névmások szintje, hanem egy műfajé (cím), s abban egy kliséé. A javaslat talán jó, de egy kicsit az "and why"-jal a "Mi végből vagyunk mi (van vmi) a földön?" vagy "Mire jó a...?" típusú cím(-klisé) irányába megy el.
