Italian term

aria di famiglia

Italian to English Social Sciences History history of religions
This one really has me stumped. At first thought it could be a typo for 'area', but not even sure that helps

the context:
Sulla base del metodo storico-critico è poi possibile ricuperare la nozione di “etnocentrismo critico”, che consente di reintrodurre l’apparato concettuale occidentale, compresa la nozione di religione (magari intesa in un senso debole, tramite concetti come quello di analogia e quello di ***aria di famiglia***).

Thanks again
Simon

Discussion

simon tanner (asker) Dec 22, 2008:
in fact it seems that both family likeness and resemblance are used, so I'm putting both in the glossary. The one I actually used was family likeness, mainly because I preferred the sound of it. Thanks to everyone, especially Science451 and Shera Lyn
simon tanner (asker) Dec 17, 2008:
family likeness this is a philosophical concept (Wittgenstein), which seems to be translated in Italian with "aria di famiglia". At least that's the idea I got from some quick googling. This would clearly give weight to Science451's answer. Any philosophers able to provide confirmation?

In translations of Wittgenstein's works, his term, Familienähnlichkeit is variously translated as both "family resemblance" and "family likeness" with, often, both versions appearing in the same English translation.

agree James (Jim) Davis : Family resemblance (German Familienähnlichkeit [1]) is a philosophical idea proposed by Ludwig Wittgenstein, with the most well known exposition being given in the posthumously published book Philosophical Investigations (1953) [2].
