The document I'm working on relates to devices to be used in the production of metal wires directly from the smelter. Any suggestion on this phrase?

winding of round wire
i.e. wire with a circular cross-section, as opposed to flat wire.
It's only a suggestion though.

winding of metal rod
see what McGraw Hill says:
copper wire: wire commonly made from copper by drawing from a hot-rolled rod without annealing.
I assume
1) the explaination can be applied to any metal, not just copper
2) the "tondo" you are referring to is not just the shape of the wire, but metal at a 'pre-wire' stage.
This would fit since you are talking about winding wires directly from the smelter.
Hope I made myself clear enough.
AUGURI!!

(iron) rod winding
penso che si tratti di "tondini" di ferro che si usano anche nel cemento armato (reinforcing rod)
3 hrs
wire spooling
bobinatura = spooling.
