Видимо, именно этот скелет в шкафу настолько не дает покоя профессору и дипломату, что пришлось МИД Польши удариться в альтернативную историю.

Another option, if something a little more physical and desperate-sounding would work.

A little more context would help, but it sounds like the following sense of "удариться" (in Lingvo's version) - во что С увлечением предаться чему-л., начать усиленно заниматься чем-л. Удариться в воспоминания. Удариться в политику, в философию. Удариться в науку. Удариться в разведение огурцов на участке. Удариться в чтение книг.
Depending on the precise context, maybe something like "to make an emergency foray into"... ?

Reply to Asker's note: I figured that's what it was about. The business of claiming that "the Third Ukrainian Front" means it was Ukrainian soldiers. This came up earlier this year, when a U.S. Ambassador at one of the 70th anniversary events in Europe made the same gaffe. Well, in that context I might go for something colorful like "made an emergency foray into," although "plunged" would be simpler.

Note from asker:
Thanks Rachel, the context is Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna's statement last Wed. that it was Ukrainians who liberated Auschwitz (i.e., not Russians) and this sentence is taken from a somewhat heated accusation/explanation of why the Foreign Ministry "plunged into/resorted to/something or other" this new version of history. |

here i would use "switch to"
or even
"shift to"
However, in fact, Grzegorz Schetyna said nothing wrong - it was the Russian side who took it incorrectly - not sure, deliberately or just playing "dumb and dumber".

Grzegorz Schetyna explained what he meant: the first Soviet tank crashing the gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp was run by Ihor Pobirchenko, Ukrainian by nationality. He became a prominent law professor after the war, lived in Kiev, Ukraine and died there back in 2012.

Я бы выразил эту мысль так: launch a probe/personal crusade (into unorthodox versions/sources).

High-ranking diplomats have to be very careful indeed as to what say when they go public, especially when it comes to sensitive subjects like the WW II (in Russia and throughout the FSU generally referred to as the “Great Patriotic War”). The death toll there stands at 25 000 000 (versus 400 000 American fatalities) which is appalling in itself, not to mention the unthinkable human suffering and the tremendous destruction that the country sustained during that war. That said, no wonder the Russians take it very personally, when various political clowns (usually driven by someone else’s agenda) not just try to underestimate and derogate the contribution that the Soviet Union made to the victory in WW II, but have the nerve (and the stupidity) to accuse the Soviets of actually invading the Nazi Germany!
