Russian term

Государственный информационно-вычислительный центр (ГИВЦ)

Russian to English Other Media / Multimedia Regulatory organization
Another Russian governmental body without an English-language website, a ripe translation apple in need of plucking if ever I saw one.

Interesting that I found two official-looking websites for this organization:
http://www.miccedu.ru/
and
http://givc.ru/

The latter looks more polished and has the MinCult's seal of approval. I'm thinking, what if we take "GIVC" and run with it-- can anyone think of anything good using this acronym? That "V" might be a deal-breaker. Any other good acronyms come to mind?

Discussion

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the input!
Eric Candle Dec 11, 2010:
Main vs. "non-main" - Each oblast' would have a MinCult Computer/Data Processing Center
- Moscow is the only place with the MinCult Main Computer/DP Center
rns Dec 11, 2010:
"Главный И-В Центр, но не Государственный И-В Центр" — that's true and "Data Processing Center" or "Data Center" both look ok then.

Eric Candle Dec 10, 2010:
ГИВЦ Министерства Культуры, is Главный И-В Центр, но не Государственный И-В Центр
Ethan Bien (asker) Dec 10, 2010:
I agree they're redundant But which one goes? "Center" has to stay, because it gives us a place. And I'm thinking "the MinCult's Data Processing Center" almost looks good, but almost doesn't need to be capitalized it's so broadly applicable.
rns Dec 10, 2010:
"Main Center is as good/bad as Главный Центр" — exactly and can be made better in translation.
Eric Candle Dec 10, 2010:
University of Toledo Main Computer Center, http://www.ljbinc.com/projectprofile.cfm?projectId=311
- Main Center is as good/bad as Главный Центр
- Checking out...
rns Dec 10, 2010:
implication of "main-ness" center — 6. A person or thing that is the chief object of attention, interest, activity, or emotion.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/center

main — 1. Most important; principal. See Synonyms at chief.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/main

Really, "main" and "center" just don't sit well together — http://goo.gl/b0hWz and "main computer center" occurs in translations (non-native English) more often than not — http://goo.gl/oeSlM
Eric Candle Dec 10, 2010:
Main computer center - research center, medical center, center for the arts, center for
disability rights - no implication of "main-ness"
- one example: is there any difference between Hospital and the
Medical Center?
**a "hospital" is a generic name for any health facility where
patients receive treatment
**a "medical center" is associated with research, advanced diagnostic
equipment, bigger facility, and some other "good stuff"
rns Dec 10, 2010:
Yes, but "center" implies "main".
Eric Candle Dec 10, 2010:
Main computer center - as opposed to the Regional/Local/... center
- Main center in Moscow with a Regional center - anywhere else
- "center" (here) is merely a facility (main office)
Natalie Dec 9, 2010:
I would leave off "Main Data" - these words are obviously redundant
rns Dec 9, 2010:
"main * center" feels tautological and unidiomatic.
Eric Candle Dec 9, 2010:
Oleksandr Kolot (X) Dec 9, 2010:
I think that Main Data Computing Centre (GIVC) sounds more English compared to other options. Maybe you should consider removing the word "data". Main Computing Centre would be better.
Ethan Bien (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
What say y'all to the Ministry of Culture’s Main Data Computing Centre (GIVC)
Oleksandr Kolot (X) Dec 9, 2010:
The name of this institution is Главный информационно-вычислительный центр, not Государственный информационно-вычислительный центр
Natalie Dec 8, 2010:
I would go for "State Information Computing Centre of the Ministry of Culture"
Oleksandr Kolot (X) Dec 8, 2010:
I don't like it either. It's just one of google search results for GIVC.
Ethan Bien (asker) Dec 8, 2010:
head data "Head data computing centre" sounds like computerized psychology :)

I think you should use GIVC acronym as they use it as their domain name.
