Discussion

Michael Korovkin Mar 7, 2011:
Jack is damn' right! You can use "contextual" and "non-contextual", but in such a case you must say something like "the speach belonging to the context of the situation in which it occurs" and "not belonging to the context of the situation in which it occurs" (say, talking about what happened to Napoleon on Sant'Elena). But then, one may just as well say simply "situational" and "non-situational", may one not? It's standard psychological/psychiatric/neurological-cognitive/psychoalalytical gobbledegook, too.

Thank you.
agree David Mossop PhD : Contextual non-contextual is a term used within pragmatics in the field of theoretical linguistics and speech act theory, whereas situative non-situative is a function of cognitive psychology, although the meanings are in my opinion identical.

Thank you. Yes, I found references in which both terms were used, so I assume the author was implying some difference between them, but I couldn't see what it was.
