a school for choir directors at the monastery
In my particular idiom of English the term "precentor" is highly marked as unusual; in Russian church contexts, "regent" is an absolutely everyday term, as is "choir director" in English. I find "choir director" both a more exact fit semantically and a much closer stylistic match.
