Spanish term

artefacto

Spanish to English Science Computers: Software BIO image scanning
SPAIN: Yes, I have looked at the several glossary entries, but I don't see any that can confirm if the literal translation (artifact) is correct in this area. In my case, it refers to scanning images: "Artefactos (sombras y reflejos) en las ecografías."
The DRAE definition is:
"En los experimentos biológicos, formación producida exclusivamente por los reactivos empleados y perturbadora de la recta interpretación de los resultados obtenidos."

I just need to confirm what the right word is in this context.

Discussion

Anthony Ottey Feb 19, 2013:
I think it's Artifacts. example: when speaking about ultrasounds or MRIs you might use: respiratory motion artifact.
neilmac (asker) Feb 19, 2013:
PS: I'm tempted to call them "floaters", like the ocular phenomena, or simply interference, which is what they are.

artefacts

Artefacts appears to be the translation.

Consider:

"Ultrasound artifacts as differential diagnostic problems in ultrasound of the upper abdomen

INTRODUCTION: The word artifact stands for any visible result of imaging procedures which is caused by the procedure itself and not the entity being analyzed. Recognition of artifacts in everyday work is of great significance for final diagnosis, since their wrong interpretation not only compromises the value of ultrasound finding, but may also lead to a wrong therapeutic approach. ULTRASOUND ARTIFACTS: Artifacts appear as the result of physical properties of an ultrasound beam, technical aspects of ultrasound apparatus and immobility in creation of ultrasound image. Artifacts in the form of acoustic shadows, acoustic enhancements and reverberation most commonly appear and lead to changed appearance of certain structures. That is why great experience and knowledge of radiologists-ultrasonographists is necessary, since diagnostic accuracy of the method itself is under their immediate control. Incorrect interpretation of artifacts and failure to recognize them reduces the value of ultrasound imaging which has, during the past 25 years, confirmed its exceptional diagnostic value."

No worries, Neil - $hit happens. Anyway, according to the notice up top "The answer that has the most net peer agrees will be awarded points at 15:11 CET" today, so not long to go. Cheers :)
Note from asker:
And it gets 2,000,000 Google hits! How embarassing! I don't understa and nd why I didn't find it when I searched myself - all I found was a wikiwords entry which I couldn't access.
Apparently I can't grade this answer now, having unwittingly "declined my grading rights" when accepting this as the most helpful. I'll try to find time to read the small print next time...
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : Pretty solid reference (PS I see it's artefact in BrE and artifact in AmE; I never knew that).

Thanks, Charles. Just noticed the spelling difference now too, and also didn't know that. We live and learn :)
