Spanish term

a la tercera

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Basketball
Referring to basketball, what is "a la tercera" referring to? The third minute or something else?

Discussion

delveneto Jul 16, 2009:
Oh yes, it looks like "la tercera" is "the third time". They tried twice with no success then only in the third game they won, but needed the overtime.
delveneto Jul 16, 2009:
I undestand "at the third quarter".

third-time lucky

It was third-time lucky for the XXX, who had already wasted two chances to win the title. But they finally managed to wrap it up with a 112-108 win against the XXX de XXX, thanks to the small forward XXX XXX, who scored 36 points and made 11 rebounds.

Forgot to add my explanation. I understand that in its last two games the team could also have won the division, but they failed to do so. This time, however, they finally won the title.

Correction to my sentence: "who had already missed out on two opportunities to win the XXX Division".

The reason for the change is because on the previous occasions they may have needed other teams to lose, so it might be unfair to say "wasted".

agree Mariel Pato : That's right! "La tercera es la vencida" is a popular saying in Spanish, meaning that you tried twice unsuccessfully and on the third time, you get lucky! ;-)

third overtime

Note that "prórroga" is the term being used to refer to "overtime". "Tiempo Extra" is the term used in the Spanish of Mexico that means "overtime". Observe the feminine gender of "prórroga" and the continuation of that feminine gender in "la tercera". Accordingly, the game was not decided until the third overtime period.

Hope this helps.

third time's the chance

Prov. The third time you try to do something, it will work. Jill: I've called Miriam twice, but she doesn't answer her phone. Jane: Try again. The third time's the charm.
